Addressing the press during an event marking the 37th anniversary of the Indonesian Issuers Association, Hartarto highlighted his meeting with Ambassador Jamieson Greer from the Office of the US Trade Representative to advance the negotiations on Thursday night (December 11).
"We have agreed to follow up on the points agreed in the Leaders Declaration on July 22. To this end, an Indonesian delegation will return to Washington in the hopes of concluding what we have started by the end of this year," he said.
By "Leaders Declaration," the minister referred to the Joint Statement on the Framework for the United States–Indonesia Agreement on Reciprocal Trade, issued by the White House on July 22, 2025.
He also said he had briefed President Prabowo on the outcomes of his meeting with Ambassador Greer, describing the talks as notable progress in ongoing negotiations on the reciprocal tariff policy rolled out by US President Donald Trump.
The minister noted that President Prabowo emphasized the need to ensure that the conclusion of the talks provides equal benefits for both countries.
"Our hope is the provisions agreed upon by President Prabowo Subianto and President Trump will be put forward in a draft agreement by the end of this year," Hartarto stated.
Following several rounds of negotiations, the Trump administration decided to lower the import duty rate on Indonesian products from 32 percent to 19 percent.
Indonesia is seeking tariff exemptions for commodities not produced in the US, including crude palm oil, rubber, tea, coffee, and other rubber-based products. Meanwhile, tariffs for textiles and footwear remain under discussion.
As part of the proposed deal, Indonesia has pledged to boost imports from the US to help balance bilateral trade. Energy imports are expected to reach up to US$15 billion, while agricultural imports are targeted at US$4.5 billion.
The package also includes investments in Indonesia and a blue ammonia facility in the US valued at a combined US$10 billion.
