We will review the nuclear power plant development proposals to determine which option is the most efficient, competitive, and delivers the best output,Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) will select a competitive partner for the development of nuclear power plants, taking into account efficiency and the amount of electricity generated.
The statement was delivered by Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s pledge to support Indonesia in developing nuclear power plants during President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to the Kremlin.
“We will review the nuclear power plant development proposals to determine which option is the most efficient, competitive, and delivers the best output,” Tanjung said at the ESDM Ministry office in Jakarta.
Tanjung added that, aside from Russia, Canada and South Korea have also offered to participate in Indonesia’s nuclear power development.
“So later we will choose based on investment size, output, and efficiency. We hope that with the development of nuclear power plants, the electricity base price purchased by PLN (the state-owned electricity company) can become more competitive,” he stated.
A similar statement was previously conveyed by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, who revealed that Canada and Russia have submitted proposals to take part in developing nuclear power plants in Indonesia.
Lahadalia said that a roadmap for nuclear power plant development has been prepared through 2034, with a total planned capacity of 500 MW. Of that amount, 250 MW will be built in Sumatra and the remaining 250 MW in Kalimantan.
Indonesia plans to use small modular reactor (SMR) technology for both sites.
In addition to Russia and Canada, Indonesia has also explored cooperation with South Korea on nuclear power development. However, South Korea utilizes large-scale reactor technology.
