Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Food Agency (Bapanas) ensured that the stock of consumer sugar is safe and sufficient ahead of Christmas and New Year or year-end holidays, with a potential significant surplus in early 2026.

"The existing stock is sufficient to meet public demand until the end of the year and even has the potential to leave a significant surplus in early 2026," Director of Food Consumption Diversification at Bapanas Rinna Syawal said in a statement on Saturday.

She affirmed that the current national sugar availability is strong with a relatively stable price trend.

She further said that based on the food balance projection as of December 4, 2025, the national needs throughout the year are estimated to reach 2.8 million tons, with monthly consumption hovering around 230 thousand–250 thousand tons.

"The needs can be met with the 1.38 million tons of carried-over stock from 2024 and national production in 2025, which is projected to reach 2.67 million tons," she remarked.

Syawal added that as of December 2025, the available consumer sugar stock stands at 1.67 million tons.

With needs reaching about 237 thousand tons, the stock is projected to remain surplus by 1.43 million tons, providing a strong initial stock as 2026 begins.

"This shows that the national sugar supply is at a safe level and capable of maintaining stability in community consumption," she asserted.

Earlier, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono stated that Indonesia will focus on achieving self-sufficiency in sugar, eggs, and chicken meat in 2026.

He said on Wednesday (December 10) that President Prabowo Subianto directed the government's priority to sugar self-sufficiency, given the major needs, covering both sugar for household consumption and sugar for strategic industries that support the national economy.
