Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers Mukhtarudin has stressed the importance of financial literacy to encourage migrant workers to manage their income more productively.

He said on Tuesday financial education aims to help migrant workers make wiser financial decisions.

He noted that around 70 percent of remittances sent home by Indonesian migrant workers are still used for consumptive purposes, while only 30 percent are allocated to productive activities.

"Our goal is to reverse this pattern so migrant workers can use their earnings for productive business activities," he said, according to a statement from his ministry.

To improve financial literacy, the ministry provides education on basic financial management, business development, and economic planning. The materials have been disseminated through printed guides, public outreach, interviews, and official forums.

Mukhtarudin added that financial literacy programs target not only prospective migrant workers during pre-departure orientation and vocational training, but also their families.

"Often, remittances are spent on consumption or poorly managed by family members, which can even create new problems at home," he said.

He expressed hope that the program would strengthen financial management skills among migrant workers and their families, enabling them to build sustainable livelihoods after returning home.
