Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has launched a comprehensive national diving guide aimed at promoting safe, high-quality and sustainable marine tourism, the tourism ministry said on Thursday.

The Tourism Ministry released the Wonderful Indonesia Diving Directory as a reference for tourists, professional divers and industry stakeholders seeking reliable information on the country’s top diving destinations, Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana told a year-end press conference in Jakarta.

The directory provides detailed profiles of diving sites across the archipelago, combining destination highlights with practical guidance on safety and infrastructure.

It includes information on the availability of hospitals equipped with hyperbaric chambers, the presence of certified dive operators, and the readiness of local tourism services to support divers.

Widiyanti said the publication is designed not only to attract visitors but also to raise standards across the sector.

“This guide is expected to be informative and educational, supporting the development of diving tourism that is safe, professional and environmentally sustainable,” she said.

The directory places a strong emphasis on eastern Indonesia, which lies at the heart of the Coral Triangle, one of the world’s most biodiverse marine regions.

Featured destinations include Bunaken in North Sulawesi, Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi, Morotai in North Maluku, Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, and Raja Ampat in Southwest Papua.

Indonesia, home to the world’s richest marine biodiversity, has both a responsibility and an opportunity to develop tourism that protects its underwater ecosystems, Widiyanti said.

She added that the directory supports the government’s Upgrading Tourism Program by strengthening the promotion of marine destinations while encouraging conservation-based tourism.

Beyond recreational diving, the guide also highlights ecosystem-friendly activities that can be enjoyed around dive sites, reinforcing the link between tourism and environmental stewardship.

The Wonderful Indonesia Diving Directory will soon be accessible digitally through the official tourism website, indonesia.travel.

The online platform is expected to help visitors obtain accurate, up-to-date information while fostering closer cooperation between government agencies, tourism businesses and local communities.

The ministry said the initiative aims to ensure that the growth of diving tourism goes hand in hand with the long-term preservation of Indonesia’s marine ecosystems.
