Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has warned that online scams pose a human security crisis and a regional threat that requires coordinated global action, Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha C. Nasir said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a high-level session of the International Conference on Global Partnership against Online Scams in Bangkok, Nasir said online scams have evolved from isolated crimes into industrial-scale organized criminal activity.

"No country in the world can confront this threat alone. Our response must be collective, coordinated, and global in scope," he said, according to a Foreign Ministry statement issued on Thursday.

Nasir said Indonesia is promoting three priority areas for global action to counter online scam networks.

First, he called for stronger cross-border law enforcement cooperation through real-time intelligence sharing and joint operations to dismantle organized criminal groups.

Second, he urged enhanced financial and cyber cooperation involving financial intelligence units and digital regulators to disrupt illicit financial flows linked to online scams.

Third, he stressed the need to place victims at the center of the response through protection, rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.

Nasir said global responses could leverage existing mechanisms, including the Bali Process, ASEAN and the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.

"Indifference creates space for criminals, but cooperation creates security," he said.

Between 2021 and 2025, more than 12,000 Indonesians were reported to have fallen victim to online scams, with many also trafficked and forced to work in scam operations across Southeast Asia.

The conference, organized by the Thai government and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, aimed to establish a Global Partnership Against Online Scams.
