Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) assessed that the weather modification operation (OMC) has been effective in suppressing rainfall intensity in Aceh, West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and surrounding areas.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, explained that during nearly a month of the operation, rainfall intensity in the three provinces affected by floods and landslides had decreased significantly.

"The number of rain-free days in the last month was recorded to be higher than days with rain," Muhari stated during a press conference as monitored from here on Thursday.

However, Muhari acknowledged that high-intensity rain still occurred in several spots and triggered subsequent flooding in several areas, including Tanjung Raya Sub-district, Agam, West Sumatra.

BNPB assessed that such conditions are highly likely given the current dynamic weather patterns, particularly across most parts of Sumatra, which are presently in the peak phase of the rainy season.

Nevertheless, Muhari assured that joint teams from BNPB, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), and the Indonesian Military (TNI) will continue efforts to control potential rainfall through the weather modification operation scheme.

“Based on information received today, there are no additional victims or new impacts beyond the floods and landslides that occurred about a month ago,” he said, while expressing appreciation for the cooperation of all parties.

According to BNPB reports as of Thursday afternoon, floods and landslides across Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra have displaced 489,864 people. Meanwhile, the death toll has reached 1,135, with 173 people still missing. Aceh recorded 503 fatalities, North Sumatra 371, and West Sumatra 261.
