Minister Arifah Fauzi made the call while inspecting passenger facilities at the station as part of a nationwide review of public transport services for women and children.
“I suggested adding games based on local wisdom,” Fauzi said during the visit.
She toured waiting rooms, lactation rooms, children’s play areas and passenger lounges, and greeted travelers, particularly children, mothers and elderly passengers. Fauzi praised KAI for its efforts to provide safe, comfortable and inclusive transportation services.
However, she said existing children’s play areas needed improvement so they would encourage meaningful interaction between parents and children, not just passive entertainment.
“It’s about giving parents more quality and intensive time with their children while they are traveling,” she said.
Fauzi proposed introducing simple traditional games reflecting Yogyakarta’s culture, such as otok-otok toys, traditional percussion instruments and basic pottery-making activities.
She also welcomed KAI’s provision of special seating arrangements that allow female passengers to sit together, which she said enhanced security and comfort, particularly for women traveling alone.
The minister noted that lactation rooms at the station were already well equipped, providing quiet and private spaces for mothers to breastfeed.
She further urged KAI to display information about complaint and reporting services more prominently through video screens or running text, to ensure passengers know how to report sexual harassment.
“If someone witnesses or experiences harassment, report it to SAPA 129 or via WhatsApp at 08111129129,” Fauzi said.
Meanwhile, Feni Novida Saragih, public relations manager for KAI’s Operations Area 6 Yogyakarta, said her division has established lactation rooms at 15 stations, children’s play areas at four major stations, as well as health posts supported by 35 medical personnel and partnerships with 51 hospitals.
“Passengers can report suspicious behavior to station staff, train conductors or through Contact Center 121,” Saragih said.
