Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto marked New Year’s Eve with disaster survivors in North Sumatra, calling for greater environmental stewardship to mitigate future risks as the country enters 2026.

Speaking at an evacuation shelter in Batu Hula Village on Wednesday, Prabowo urged citizens to remain vigilant and protect the nation’s natural resources.

"Though we live in an enormous, beautiful, and prosperous country, it is vital for us to remain mindful of nature’s sustainability," he said in a video broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat.

"We must respect, safeguard, and nurture our environment while avoiding harmful acts."

The President arrived at the shelter shortly before midnight to assess recovery efforts following the devastating floods and landslides that struck three Sumatran provinces in November 2025.

His visit was intended to signal government solidarity with those still displaced by the disasters.

“We the government were elected by the people and work for the people,” Prabowo affirmed. “Therefore, I decided to stay with our brothers and sisters currently facing hardships as the year changes.”

Beyond policy assessments, the visit included humanitarian efforts to boost morale.

The government deployed mobile units equipped with large screens to show animated movies for children and residents in the camp.

The President assured citizens that his administration remains committed to long-term disaster response and addressing the recurring environmental threats that challenge the archipelago.
