Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Culture Minister Fadli Zon has outlined the government's plan to prepare a history book documenting the struggle to defend the country's independence from 1945 to 1949.

"This year, we also plan to write a history book on an important period, namely what the Dutch call the revolutionary period, but which we describe as the war to defend independence, covering 1945 to 1949," he said during a talk show on Saturday.

Zon explained that the historical account will include events surrounding the proclamation of independence, Dutch recognition of sovereignty, the establishment of the United States of Indonesia, and the dissolution of the federal state leading to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.

He stressed the importance of writing history in a comprehensive manner to ensure future generations understand the nation's struggle.

"This needs to be written comprehensively, covering diplomatic, political, and military events that are essential for future generations," he said.

Zon also said the Ministry of Culture has completed the compilation of a book titled "Indonesian History: National Dynamics in Global Currents."

The book, launched on December 14, 2025, involved 134 historians from 34 universities across Indonesia.

He highlighted the role of the History Directorate at the Ministry of Culture in national history writing efforts.

"Many people say history is important and should not be forgotten, but sometimes we do not write history," Zon said.

He encouraged the History Directorate to compile books on major kingdoms in the archipelago, including Sriwijaya, Majapahit, and Padjajaran.

Zon said the books are expected to spark public discourse and remain open to debate.

"None may be perfect, but that is exactly why those debates and that dialectic are important," he added.
