Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has temporarily blocked Elon Musk’s Grok AI over concerns it facilitates non-consensual deepfake pornography, marking a significant escalation in the country's efforts to regulate artificial intelligence and digital safety.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs announced the move on Saturday, citing the urgent need to protect women, children, and the general public from the psychological and social harms of AI-generated explicit content.

"The government views non-consensual sexual deepfakes as a serious violation of human rights, dignity, and citizens’ security in the digital space," said Minister Meutya Hafid in an official statement.

She categorized the misuse of AI for creating fake pornography as a form of "digital-based violence."

The Indonesian government is demanding that digital platforms operating within the country prove they have adequate safeguards to prevent the production or distribution of prohibited content.

As part of this enforcement, the Ministry has issued a formal summons to Platform X (formerly Twitter).

The company is required to provide clarification, explaining the negative impacts of Grok’s current configuration.

In addition to demonstrate compliance, the company should also outline mitigation by presenting concrete technical measures to prevent future misuse.

The block is supported by Ministerial Regulation No.5/2020, which governs Private Electronic System Operators.

This regulation gives the Indonesian government broad authority to restrict access to platforms that fail to moderate "prohibited content" or fail to coordinate with state safety requirements.

Minister Hafid emphasized that while the block is currently temporary, the future of Grok in Indonesia—one of the world's largest social media markets—depends entirely on the platform's willingness to implement strict content filters and ethical AI standards.
