“Indonesia’s local food sources are rich enough to meet children’s protein and calcium needs without relying on cow’s milk,” said Mita Arini, a clinical nutritionist at Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital.
Speaking to ANTARA in Jakarta on Tuesday, she said foods such as tempeh, tofu, chicken eggs, chicken meat, legumes and fish including mackerel, catfish and anchovies are strong protein alternatives.
These foods also provide calcium, vitamins and other essential micronutrients needed to support healthy childhood growth, she added.
Mita said leafy vegetables including katuk leaves, spinach and broccoli can also contribute meaningful calcium intake for children.
As a milk substitute, she said fortified soy milk can be considered, provided it meets nutritional standards and is consumed in appropriate amounts.
Fresh cow’s milk contains about 3.2 grams of protein per 100 milliliters, while soy milk provides around 3.5 grams, she said. Almond milk contains only about 0.6 grams.
Because of its low protein content, almond milk should not be considered a primary protein source for children, Mita said.
“Protein from animal sources has a more complete amino acid profile than plant-based protein and is important for supporting children’s growth,” she said.
Mita also urged parents to remain alert to possible food allergies when choosing protein and calcium sources to replace cow’s milk.
Allergic reactions may include red rashes, itching or hives on the skin, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, coughing or shortness of breath after consuming allergenic foods.
“In some children, swelling of the lips or eyelids and excessive fussiness can also occur,” she said.
Mita emphasized the importance of following the Health Ministry’s Isi Piringku balanced diet guidelines to meet daily nutritional needs.
The guidelines recommend balanced portions of carbohydrates, protein-rich side dishes, vegetables and fruits to ensure adequate intake of vitamins and minerals.
“With the right combination of local foods, children’s nutritional needs can still be met optimally,” Mita said.
