Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has announced the government’s target of establishing 500 topquality schools nationwide within four years as part of efforts to nurture a generation of competitive talents.

He explained that the schools will be branded either as Taruna Nusantara High School or Garuda High School.

“Our target is for each province to host at least one Taruna Nusantara High School or Garuda High School. All provinces must have a flagship school,” Prabowo remarked during the inauguration of a new Taruna Nusantara campus in Malang, East Java, on Tuesday.

In a speech livestreamed by the Presidential Secretariat and monitored in Jakarta, the president highlighted that the government will further expand the network of Taruna Nusantara High School, which is widely recognized for its semi-militaristic approach to quality education.

Known as a highachieving school, Taruna Nusantara counts among its alumni several members of President Prabowo’s cabinet, including Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono.

Prabowo noted that the school currently operates two other campuses in Magelang, Central Java, and Cimahi, West Java, while additional facilities are under development in the new capital Nusantara, East Kalimantan; Minahasa, North Sulawesi; and Pagar Alam, South Sumatra.

The head of state also outlined plans to establish at least 20 schools under the Garuda School program to broaden access to topnotch education services across various regions.

“This endeavor is expected to accelerate the awakening of the Indonesian nation,” he affirmed.

Furthermore, Prabowo emphasized that toptier schools must not only focus on academic excellence but also on instilling noble character in their pupils.

He expressed hope that such schools will nurture future patriotic leaders equipped with the skills and leadership qualities needed to drive national progress.

Indonesia officially introduced the Garuda School program on October 8 last year, aiming to strengthen science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education nationwide.

“Students nurtured under this initiative are expected to qualify for top national and global universities,” Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti said during the program’s launch at M.H. Thamrin Public High School in Jakarta.

The launch designated 12 high-performing schools as pioneers and marked the start of construction of four new schools across various regions.
