"We evaluated 300 companies across the three provinces and are now monitoring 100," he said in a meeting with the Indonesian Association of District Legislative Councils (ADKASI) in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He confirmed that environmental audits would be prioritized for companies operating within North Sumatra's landscapes that have been affected by recent flooding.
Nurofiq further stated that the Ministry of Environment will file civil lawsuits against six companies operating in North Sumatra, with the total value expected to reach trillions of rupiah.
This legal action against those companies stems from activities conducted outside of their environmental approval documents, which are suspected of contributing to the flooding.
"We must uphold a sense of justice for the community in these cases. We are not playing around. For these cases in northern Sumatra, we will pursue civil lawsuits," the minister stressed.
Following floods and landslides in Sumatra, the Ministry of Environment sealed off several companies across three affected provinces: Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.
This step was taken due to allegations that the companies' activities contributed to factors that caused the disasters.
Additionally, in December 2025, the ministry summoned eight companies operating in North Sumatra for further investigation, including mining company Agincourt Resources and pulp and paper company PT Toba Pulp Lestari.
Devastating floods and landslides struck the three provinces of Sumatra in late November 2025 following high-intensity rainfall.
According to National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) records as of January 14, 2026, the death toll has reached 1,190, with 141 residents still missing. Approximately 131,500 people remain displaced as relief efforts continue.
