Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto held a dialogue with 1,200 professors, deans and university rectors in Jakarta on Thursday, focusing on academic and policy issues in the social sciences and humanities.

Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Prof. Stella Christie said the closed-door meeting underscored the government's growing attention to social humanities, following earlier consultations that emphasized science and technology.

"Previously, the focus was broader and leaned toward STEM. This meeting shows that social sciences are now being prioritized," Stella said ahead of the dialogue at the Presidential Palace.

She said the meeting began at 9 a.m. and featured a briefing by President Prabowo followed by an interactive discussion with academics from across the country.

"We are very pleased the president wants to engage directly with us, the academic community," Stella added.

Some participants attended in full academic regalia bearing their university insignia, while others wore plain suits.

Several senior officials were also present, including State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.

The dialogue aimed to strengthen communication between the government and higher education institutions, particularly on issues related to social humanities research, education and policy relevance.

It forms part of broader efforts to ensure social sciences remain integrated into Indonesia’s higher education priorities and national policy planning.

Thursday’s meeting followed a similar dialogue in March 2025 involving professors in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as part of a series of targeted consultations with academic leaders.

Prabowo’s outreach reflects a broader effort to involve universities more actively in national policy formulation and long-term development planning.

On October 19, 2025, he held a closed-door meeting with his cabinet ministers to discuss issues related to STEM.
