Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Law Minister Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej has urged the Public Order Agency, known as Satpol PP, to carry out its duties in a justice-oriented manner and with a strong understanding of the new Criminal Code (KUHP).

Speaking at an educational event on the new Criminal Code in Palembang, South Sumatra, Hiariej said the code represents a national legal reform that is more just, humanist, and in line with Pancasila values and local wisdom.

“Satpol PP has a strategic role in maintaining public order and enforcing regional regulations,” Hiariej said in a statement here on Friday.

He emphasized that educational programs for regional officials, including Satpol PP personnel, are essential to ensure that law enforcement at the local level is aligned with the national legal framework.

South Sumatra Governor Herman Deru welcomed the visit and the educational program, expressing the provincial government’s commitment to supporting the implementation of the new Criminal Code through capacity building for officials and cross-sector coordination.

The event formed part of the government’s broader effort to improve understanding among regional law enforcement officers and the public regarding both the substance and the spirit of the national criminal law reform.

During the visit, Hiariej was received by the governor and accompanied by the Head of Satpol PP of South Sumatra, underscoring coordination between the central and regional governments in supporting the implementation of the Criminal Code and the new Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).

The event was attended by Satpol PP personnel from across South Sumatra and featured an interactive forum to discuss the new Criminal Code, including its implications for local government duties and functions.

The program is expected to build early and comprehensive understanding of the Criminal Code to ensure its effective implementation in line with the objectives of national criminal law reform.
