The ministry's Director of Land Ecosystem Protection and Management Puji Iswari said on Monday that the figure is reflected in the 2025 National Mangrove Map, which was formalized on December 23, 2025.
She said mangrove forests are found in all provinces except Highland Papua, with South Papua recording the largest coverage at 622,288 hectares.
Other provinces with extensive mangrove areas include West Papua, Central Papua, East Kalimantan, and Riau, she added.
To strengthen management and protection, Iswari said the ministry has established 123 mangrove landscape units (KLMs) in collaboration with 38 universities.
She explained that KLMs are designated mangrove management zones in downstream river areas, where substrate and salinity conditions support mangrove growth and are closely linked to surrounding socio-economic systems.
Iswari said KLM designation in 2024 covered North Sumatra, Riau, East Kalimantan, and North Kalimantan.
She added that KLM establishment in 2025 focused on Riau Islands, Jambi, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, West Kalimantan, and Southwest Papua.
"Our target for 2026 is to establish KLMs in 26 provinces," Iswari said.
