Head of the Ministry’s Transportation Environmental Governance Division Dodhy Wiboso said the aviation industry plays a strategic role in achieving Indonesia’s emission reduction targets.
“Bioavtur is part of our effort to achieve low-emission air transportation. This not only supports our commitment to reducing emissions but also ensures the long-term sustainability of the aviation sector,” Dodhy said here on Monday, adding that a gradual transition toward more environmentally friendly fuels is therefore essential.
The ministry views bioavtur development and utilization as a key solution to reduce reliance on fossil-based jet fuel, while maintaining flight safety and operational standards.
The initiative aligns with Indonesia’s national climate policies and commitment to a clean energy transition across the transportation sector, including civil aviation.
Dodhy noted that successful implementation will require collaboration across ministries, industry stakeholders, and energy providers to ensure gradual and sustainable adoption.
He pointed out that bioavtur is already in limited use, with Pelita Air operating flights using fuel processed from used cooking oil.
However, production capacity remains insufficient, and palm oil—another potential feedstock—continues to face sustainability concerns.
“In the future, if palm oil is to be used for bioavtur, we must be able to prove that the raw material is sustainable,” Dodhy stressed.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to promoting innovation and strengthening environmental governance in aviation, aiming to build a more sustainable national transportation system.
