Jakarta (ANTARA) -

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has ordered an urgent response to floods across Java, instructing officials to prioritize rescue efforts and step up disaster mitigation as heavy rains trigger widespread inundation.

State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said Prabowo issued the instructions during a limited cabinet meeting on Saturday after receiving reports of flooding, landslides and standing water in areas including Pati, Kudus in Central Java, as well as North Jakarta.

"The president immediately instructed all relevant authorities to ensure the fastest possible response, particularly in incidents involving casualties," Prasetyo told reporters at the presidential palace on Monday.

Officials also reported breaches in flood embankments at several locations, heightening risks as intense rainfall continues during the seasonal peak.

Prabowo has tasked Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian with identifying flood-prone zones vulnerable to river flooding, coastal inundation and tidal flooding, Prasetyo said.

The mapping will serve as the basis for preventive and mitigation measures aimed at reducing the impact of similar disasters in the future.

“There is a shared responsibility within the government to think quickly about anticipation and mitigation so the effects of such events can be reduced going forward,” Prasetyo added.

Prabowo may also visit affected areas in the coming days as flooding continues in several parts of Java.

Heavy rainfall has inundated a number of regions, including Lamongan in East Java; Pekalongan, Batang, Kudus, Demak, Pati, and Jepara in Central Java; Karawang and Bekasi in West Java; and North Jakarta.
