Speaking at 10 Downing Street, where the meeting was held on the second floor of the British prime minister’s office, Prabowo welcomed the planned agreements, saying the two areas were of high strategic importance for Indonesia and Britain alike.
The maritime cooperation set to be agreed includes the signing of a memorandum of understanding on the construction of fishing vessels for Indonesian fishermen, aimed at boosting domestic capacity and supporting coastal communities.
In education, Indonesia is preparing to seal a partnership with the Russell Group, a consortium of 24 of Britain’s leading universities, to expand academic collaboration and access to top-tier institutions.
Starmer, for his part, expressed pleasure at the close relations and cooperation that have developed between the two countries, according to officials present at the meeting.
Several Indonesian ministers accompanied Prabowo to the talks, including Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto, Investment and Downstreaming Minister Rosan Roeslani, Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto, Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

In a separate briefing in Jakarta on Monday, State Secretary and presidential spokesman Prasetyo Hadi said the fishing vessel agreement was designed to help fishermen, stimulate local economies and safeguard Indonesia’s marine wealth for national benefit.
He noted that roughly two-thirds of Indonesia’s territory consists of seas, creating demand for at least tens of thousands of fishing boats.
“We are open to cooperation with anyone, domestically or internationally, to expand our fleet of fishing vessels,” Prasetyo told reporters.
On the education partnership, Deputy Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Stella Christie said Prabowo had instructed his team to focus only on Britain’s top universities.
“I have personally been preparing the partnership with the Russell Group. This group represents the 24 most elite universities in the UK,” Stella said in Jakarta last week.
She added that the president wanted Indonesia to collaborate exclusively with world-class institutions, rather than entering into partnerships with less prominent universities.
