Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said on Thursday that Indonesia continues to grow steadily despite global economic uncertainty, recording economic growth of more than 5 percent.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Prabowo cited recent praise from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which described Indonesia as a “global bright spot” amid tightening financial conditions, trade tensions, and political uncertainty worldwide.

“While the world has faced tightening financial conditions, trade tensions, and political uncertainty, Indonesia continues to grow,” Prabowo said in remarks monitored in Jakarta.

Prabowo explained that Indonesia’s economy has grown by more than 5 percent annually and is expected to achieve higher growth this year. Inflation remains low at around 2 percent, while the government deficit has been maintained below 3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).

The head of state said international institutions have recognized Indonesia’s economic resilience based on data rather than optimism, adding that government policies are and will remain well calibrated.

“International institutions did not praise us because of unfounded optimism. They did so because of evidence. They recognize that Indonesia’s economy is resilient. Our policies have been and will always be well calibrated,” he emphasized.

Prabowo also highlighted political stability as a key factor supporting sustained economic growth.

He said peace and stability in Indonesia over the years did not happen by chance or luck, but because the nation has consistently chosen unity.

“It happened because we, Indonesia, have chosen and will always continue to choose unity over fragmentation, friendship and collaboration over confrontation, and cooperation over enmity,” he said.

Indonesia’s credibility in global markets has been built over decades and carefully preserved, Prabowo added, warning that “credibility, once lost, is very expensive to regain.”

He also reaffirmed Indonesia’s long-standing commitment to fiscal discipline, noting that the country has never defaulted on its debt.

“Not once. Succeeding administrations have always paid the debts of previous governments. Presidents will always honor the obligations of the previous administration,” he said.

The WEF 2026 agenda features speeches by numerous world leaders, including presidents and prime ministers from around the globe.

Indonesia’s president had not attended the WEF for more than a decade prior to Prabowo’s appearance.

The first Indonesian president to participate in the forum was Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who delivered a speech on green or environmentally friendly economics in 2011.
