Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has stepped up its campaign against drug trafficking in border regions, strengthening integrated operations under the national Prevention and Eradication of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (P4GN) program.

BNN spokesperson Putu Putera Sadana explained that the initiative combines strict law enforcement with humanitarian measures, including rehabilitation programs, to protect communities and safeguard future generations from narcotics.

“The state acts firmly to close space for drug crime while providing recovery paths for users,” Putu said in Jakarta, Friday, emphasizing the dual focus on enforcement and public protection.

The agency has called on citizens to play an active role by reporting suspected drug abuse or trafficking in their neighborhoods.

Public vigilance and cooperation, Putu stressed, are essential to building safe, healthy, and drug-free communities—particularly in strategic border areas such as Batam, which serves as a key transit hub near Singapore and Malaysia.

In mid-January 2026, BNN reinforced patrols in Batam and coordinated with police, military, customs, and immigration officials to disrupt three trafficking attempts.

At Hang Nadim Airport and Bintang 99 Persada Port, officers seized a total of 550 grams of narcotics, including 542.3 grams of methamphetamine and 8.9 grams of synthetic THC. Five suspects were arrested, while three remain on the wanted list.

The seizures included methamphetamine hidden in sandals, narcotics packed as body wraps, and drugs concealed in a suitcase.

BNN also carried out nightclub inspections in Batam, testing 84 individuals, including singers and foreign nationals. Five singers tested positive for drug use.

Those who test positive undergo assessment to determine their level of involvement.

Individuals not linked to trafficking are directed to rehabilitation programs tailored to their needs, reflecting BNN’s “firm yet fair” approach that balances enforcement with recovery.
