According to the military's written statement on Friday, its officers involved themselves by laying the bridges' foundations, installing safety fences, and carrying out finishing touches before opening the bridges to the public.
"The works are carried out to help restore residents' connectivity, which was disrupted due to damage to bridges that connect villages in the region," the Indonesian Army's (TNI-AD's) Information Office head, Brigadier General Donny Pramono, stated.
Military officers worked together with residents to restore safe and usable road access connecting economic and social centers after the devastating disaster last year, which affected North Sumatra, Aceh, and West Sumatra provinces.
To date, more than 96 percent of regional roads in North Sumatra have been restored following the disaster, while only 28.13 percent of bridges are operational, as reconstruction on the remaining bridges is ongoing.
Of the eight bridges in which the Indonesian military played a role in reconstruction, seven were suspension bridges, with four in the Central Tapanuli District serving residents of Andam Dewi, Tukka, and Barus sub-districts.
Meanwhile, North Nias, West Nias, and North Padang Lawas districts each received one suspension bridge built with military assistance.
The remaining bridge was a Bailey bridge, built to serve residents in Boronadu Sub-district, South Nias District.
Three provinces of Sumatra: Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, were hit by heavy rainfall-triggered floods and landslides in late November 2025.
According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) records, as of January 27, the disasters claimed 1,204 lives and left 140 others missing across the three provinces, with the number of evacuees standing at around 111,800.
