Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is fast-tracking permanent homes for communities hit by floods and landslides in North Sumatra while expanding temporary shelters for residents displaced by disasters.

The Presidential Media Team said on Friday that projects are underway in North Tapanuli and South Tapanuli districts, prioritizing areas most affected by floods and landslides.

In Dolok Nauli village, Adian Koting Sub-district, North Tapanuli, permanent housing foundations have begun in Simate Mate hamlet on land donated by the district government.

A total of 103 permanent houses will be built on more than two hectares, supported by the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas, the Presidential Media Team said.

The type-36 houses, with two bedrooms, are intended for residents whose homes were destroyed, severely damaged, or located in officially designated high-risk red-zone areas.

Budiman Gultom, head of North Tapanuli Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, said the permanent housing project is targeted for completion by April 21, 2026.

In South Tapanuli, 227 permanent houses are being built in Sigala-gala village, Batang Toru sub-district, for residents affected by major flooding in the Batang Toru river basin.

Field monitoring shows construction has reached foundation work, brick wall installation, and door frame fitting stages.

Alongside permanent housing, the government is preparing land to help residents move from temporary shelters to new homes.

Temporary housing construction continues in Sibalanga Village, Adian Koting Sub-district, where 40 units are being built by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency with local government support.

The site is remote, requiring about eight hours of overland travel from Medan, highlighting logistical challenges in disaster response.

Housing development involves cross-sector collaboration among ministries and government institutions to ensure efficiency and continuity.

In West Sumatra, temporary housing is being constructed in Kapalo Koto Urban Village, Pauh Sub-district, Padang City, by the West Sumatra Police Mobile Brigade.

Work there includes wall installation, flooring, structural framing, and concrete casting.

By providing permanent housing while maintaining temporary shelters, the government aims to ensure sustainable post-disaster recovery for affected communities across Indonesia.
