Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar said in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday that madrasahs play a strategic role not only as educational institutions but also as centers for community service and humanitarian response.
He emphasized that restoring madrasahs and safeguarding the welfare of teachers must be a shared priority to ensure that teaching and learning activities can resume normally.
“Madrasahs have contributed greatly. Even during emergencies, they remain a vital part of humanitarian efforts. Therefore, the state must ensure that madrasahs and their teachers can recover,” the minister said.
The assistance includes Rp300 million in rehabilitation funds to repair the severely damaged homes of madrasah teachers.
In addition, the ministry allocated Rp126 million in rental assistance for 21 affected madrasah teachers to ensure access to decent temporary housing during the recovery period.
The ministry also provided Rp160 million in compensation to the families of 10 madrasah students who lost their lives in the disasters, along with burial assistance of Rp10 million.
Umar said that providing proper and dignified burials is a crucial part of honoring the victims and fulfilling humanitarian responsibilities.
He added that the aid marks an initial response, noting that central and regional officials have been instructed to continue support, including further assessments of the needs of madrasahs and affected families.
