Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology is exploring strategic partnerships with the University of Oxford to strengthen higher education, research, and health services in Indonesia.

The discussions took place during a meeting between Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto and an Oxford delegation in Jakarta on Friday.

“We sincerely hope this meeting marks the beginning of a broader collaboration between Indonesia and the University of Oxford, particularly in strengthening higher education, research, and health technology development,” Minister Yuliarto said in a statement on Sunday.

He added that a primary focus is the plan to establish integrated medical faculties across various regions of Indonesia.

This initiative aims to expand access to healthcare, improve the quality of medical professionals, and reduce the public's reliance on seeking medical treatment abroad.

“Following the president's directives, we plan to construct ten medical faculties across various islands in Indonesia, integrated with world-class teaching hospitals,” Yuliarto remarked.

Heidi Johansen-Berg, a delegate from the University of Oxford, welcomed the initiative, noting Indonesia’s grand vision for higher education and healthcare development.

She affirmed Oxford's commitment to supporting partnerships in research, technological innovation, and global talent development.

She also highlighted potential collaboration in health data, digital technology, and cross-border research networks.

The ministry’s collaboration with Oxford is expected to cover curriculum development, joint research, health technology innovation, academic exchanges, and institutional capacity building.

Opportunities for cooperation are also open in priority areas such as vaccines, artificial intelligence in healthcare, disease diagnostics, health data, and strengthening research on infectious diseases such as tuberculosis.

As a follow-up, both parties plan to form a joint working group to map collaboration priorities and explore schemes for joint research, academic exchanges, and the development of training and fellowship programs.

This initiative is intended to serve as the foundation for a long-term Indonesia–Oxford partnership to support the transformation of higher education and health research.
