The head of the Tangerang City BPBD, Mahdiar, said in Tangerang on Tuesday that residents should increase vigilance and limit activities involving river water until official information on pollution levels is released.
“We urge the public to temporarily avoid direct contact with the Cisadane River. Residents are also advised to monitor official updates from the BPBD, the Regional Water Company (PDAM), and the Environmental Agency regarding environmental conditions,” he said.
Earlier, raw water pollution in the Cisadane River was reported following a chemical warehouse fire incident in Serpong, South Tangerang.
On Monday (February 9), the river water was contaminated with hazardous chemical waste, marked by a pungent odor, oily surface conditions, and sudden fish deaths.
Mahdiar therefore urged residents to pay close attention to the quality of well water in their respective areas, particularly if there are changes in odor, color, or taste.
Residents were also advised not to consume fish from the Cisadane River that may have been affected by the pollution.
In addition, the public was urged to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms of exposure, such as skin irritation, respiratory problems, or sore or watery eyes.
Mahdiar also asked the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information, adding that the local government will continue to provide regular updates.
“In the event of an emergency, residents can contact emergency services at 112 or the Tangerang City BPBD and Fire Department hotline at 021-5582144,” he said.
