Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has introduced a nationwide Work From Anywhere (WFA) scheme to manage the massive travel surge expected during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday.

The policy, announced by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto here on Tuesday will take effect on March 16–17 during the outbound travel period and March 25–27 during the return flow.

Hartarto explained that the initiative is designed to optimize public mobility during one of the world’s largest annual homecoming, while ensuring workers can continue their duties remotely

He stressed that WFA is not a holiday but a flexible arrangement, applying to both civil servants and private sector employees.

Essential industries such as healthcare, hospitality, retail, manufacturing, and food and beverage are exempt from the scheme to safeguard critical services.

Minister of Manpower Yassierli underscored that WFA days must not be deducted from annual leave allowances.

Employees working remotely are entitled to full wages, equivalent to what they would receive in their regular workplace, and companies are required to regulate working hours and supervision to maintain productivity.

The government has urged regional administrations and businesses to adopt the policy, which is expected to ease traffic congestion, protect worker rights, and support Indonesia’s first-quarter 2026 economic growth target.

A formal circular will be issued to governors, district heads, and mayors to ensure nationwide compliance.
