Jakarta (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi stated that 143.9 million people are projected to travel during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday season.

He explained that the figure is based on a survey conducted by the Ministry of Transportation to assess public travel preferences and intentions.

“Compared to last year's survey estimate of 146 million, the projection is slightly lower. However, the actual realization in 2025 reached 154 million travelers,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.

The minister affirmed that the ministry has coordinated preparations for the holiday exodus during a ministerial meeting at the headquarters of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture.

“Although there is a projected decrease of 1.7 percent, it does not reduce our vigilance. Last year’s experience showed that actual travel can significantly exceed initial estimates,” Purwagandhi said.

To accommodate the massive movement of people, the ministry has prepared 31,345 buses, 2,683 trains, 829 ships, 392 aircraft, and 255 ferries. He added that safety inspections have already been conducted on 19,376 land transport vehicles, 485 sea vessels, 19 ferries, 392 aircraft, and 2,177 train units.

“We will continue to ensure that every mode of transport operating during the Eid travel period is safe and roadworthy,” he stressed.

The ministry has also introduced supporting measures, including ticket discounts, free homecoming (mudik) programs, and a joint ministerial decree regulating freight vehicle operations during the peak travel period.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Pratikno emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration and continuous evaluation across all service areas.

He praised the coordination and strategic measures taken by ministries and agencies, noting that last year’s positive outcomes provide a strong foundation for managing this year’s Eid homecoming season.
