Probolinggo Police Chief AKBP M. Wahyudin Latif confirmed on Tuesday that the incident occurred on Sunday, Feb. 15, when the tourists’ vehicle was parked at the Sukapura District Hall.
The group briefly left the locked vehicle. Upon returning, they found it had been broken into and seven suitcases were missing.
Latif said the case is being treated as a priority because it involves the safety of foreign visitors.
“This incident affects the image of Mount Bromo as a safe and welcoming destination. We are committed to handling it professionally and ensuring that tourists feel secure,” he said.
Investigators have reviewed CCTV footage from the surrounding area and questioned local residents as witnesses.
A special team has been formed to expedite the investigation, and police have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Authorities emphasized that Mount Bromo, one of Indonesia’s most well-known tourist destinations, has generally been regarded as safe and orderly.
Police pledged to restore public confidence by resolving the case promptly and strengthening security measures for both international and domestic travelers.
