Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is seeking to forge more cooperation agreements to expand school revitalization and restore learning in Sumatra following recent floods and landslides.

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti in Jakarta on Wednesday stated that as of February 15, his ministry had signed revitalization cooperation pacts with 746 schools with a total value of Rp866.5 billion (approximately US$51.3 million).

He expounded that the 746 schools comprise 340 in Aceh, 210 in North Sumatra, and 196 in West Sumatra.

"From the 746 schools that have signed agreements, a total of Rp231.7 billion has been disbursed, and the rest is in progress," Mu'ti said during a coordination meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR).

He affirmed that his ministry will hold further coordination meetings with local education offices to speed up reconstruction. The target is to sign revitalization agreements with 1,204 more schools starting in the fourth week of February.

"The additional agreements comprise 731 schools in Aceh, 62 schools in West Sumatra, and 411 schools in North Sumatra," he added.

Beyond school revitalization targets, the ministry is also processing the verification and bank account creation for 13,000 teachers to distribute Special Teacher Allowances (TKG), totaling Rp83.3 billion.

He clarified that the various allowances for teachers in disaster-affected areas do not require them to meet a minimum teaching load.

Three provinces of Sumatra: Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, were previously hit by heavy rainfall-triggered floods and landslides in late November 2025.

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) records, as of February 18, the disasters claimed 1,206 lives, while 138 residents remain missing.

Earlier, Minister Mu'ti noted that the total number of affected schools across the three provinces reached 4,863. This includes 3,409 schools with light damage, 925 with moderate damage, 437 with severe damage, and 92 that require complete relocation.
