Indonesia’s Higher Education, Science and Technology Ministry has stepped up cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency to strengthen research, academic partnerships and industry collaboration, officials said.
The initiative was discussed during a recent meeting between Minister Brian Yuliarto and JICA Chief Representative Sachiko Takeda, according to a ministry statement released Saturday.
Yuliarto praised the long-standing partnership with JICA, which has included infrastructure upgrades, development of research facilities and capacity building at Indonesian universities through links with Japanese campuses and companies.
“We are open to receiving input from JICA or having experts help identify priority sectors that Indonesia needs to develop,” Yuliarto said.
He said the ministry is drafting a national master plan for higher education, science and technology infrastructure as part of an integrated policy framework, adding that the government welcomes JICA’s contributions to help shape its direction.
Takeda reaffirmed JICA’s commitment to expanding collaboration in higher education, science and technology, including stronger industry-academia ties.
She said new projects are being prepared to enhance science, technology and arts programs at five Indonesian universities.
“We aim to strengthen industry-academia collaboration by involving Japanese companies,” Takeda said.
Both sides agreed to support the transformation of Indonesia’s higher education sector to make it more globally competitive and inclusive.
Officials said sustained cooperation is expected to reinforce Indonesia’s research and innovation ecosystem, expand private sector participation and improve equitable access to quality higher education nationwide.
