"There are two cargo ships owned by Pertamina currently in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels are docked to find safer locations while we negotiate," Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia stated on Wednesday (March 4).
The state-owned oil company, Pertamina, has guaranteed the safety of the crews amid the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Furthermore, Lahadalia ensured that the situation does not threaten Indonesia's energy security, as the country is rapidly seeking alternative energy sources from the United States.
"Geopolitical conditions are currently unfavorable, but the government is prepared to design and implement alternatives for crude oil, fuel, and LPG. God willing, it is safe," he said.
This search for alternatives is moving forward alongside diplomatic efforts to secure the passage of the tankers.
Earlier, Iranian media reported that the Strait of Hormuz had been "effectively" closed following a US-Israeli attack. The corridor is a global chokepoint, handling approximately one-fifth of the world's oil trade and significant volumes of liquefied natural gas from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
About 20 percent of global daily oil consumption, or approximately 20 million barrels, passes through the corridor.
PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) reported on Monday (March 2) that four of its vessels were in the Middle East: the Gamsunoro, currently loading in Khor al-Zubair, Iraq; the Pertamina Pride, which has completed loading and is currently anchored in Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia; the PIS Rinjani, currently anchored in Khor Fakkan, UAE; and the PIS Paragon, currently discharging in Oman.
Two ships remain in the bay area: the Pertamina Pride, managed by NYK, and the Gamsunoro, currently managed by Synergy Ship Management. Both are under real-time monitoring to ensure their safety.
"We are working to move both ships out of the area as soon as possible. Our fleet team is in close communication with management to coordinate and ensure the safety of the crew and vessels," said Vega Pita, Acting Corporate Secretary of PIS.
