Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto received backing from several Middle Eastern and other Islamic countries for Indonesia’s initiative to mediate and ease tensions between the United States and Iran.

Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning, Nusron Wahid, stated that President Prabowo aims to create a meeting between the two parties to encourage a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.

"The president wants a meeting between the United States and Iran to mediate, and for Iran to open up," he said when met at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Thursday evening (March 5).

According to Wahid, the diplomatic steps initiated by Prabowo have received support from several leaders in the Middle East and other Islamic countries, including Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.

However, further details regarding these diplomatic steps are the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he continued.

“Of course, it is the Foreign Affairs Minister’s prerogative to provide an explanation. However, the president’s efforts to seek support from other Middle Eastern leaders had been explained earlier,” Wahid remarked.

He noted that President Prabowo, along with several other leaders of the Developing Eight (D-8), shared a desire to promote peace in the region.

According to him, the leaders agreed that the conflict should not be prolonged, particularly if it risks sparking wider tensions in Iran and the Gulf region.

"President Prabowo, along with the seven leaders of the Developing Eight, seek for peace. We should not allow wars to drag on, especially in Iran, the Gulf region, and so on," Wahid emphasized.

In addition, President Prabowo and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have had a phone call discussing their plans to travel to Tehran, to help de-escalate tensions in the Middle East amid US-Israel attacks on Iran.

In an official statement, Prime Minister Sharif described his conversation with President Prabowo as “very productive.”

He noted that the two leaders exchanged views on developments in the Middle East as well as Pakistan’s recent conflict with Afghanistan.

“We agreed to maintain close coordination over the next few days to jointly advocate for peace and stability in the region,” he said.
