Budi said the 14th Ministerial Conference should be used as momentum to revive WTO agricultural negotiations, which have stagnated in recent years.
“Indonesia stresses that the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference must be used to reinvigorate agricultural negotiations that have stalled over the past few years. As coordinator of the G-33, Indonesia calls for WTO agricultural reform to remain development-oriented,” Budi said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He added that several aspects - including food security, the welfare of smallholder farmers, and national development priorities - must become key elements in shaping the direction of the reform.
The G-33 Ministerial Meeting this time carries the theme “G-33 Priorities and Collective Action toward MC-14 for Advancing Inclusive WTO Agricultural Negotiation.”
One of the main agenda items of the meeting is the alignment of a Joint Ministerial Statement by G-33 members to be delivered at the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference, he said.
In the joint statement, according to Budi, G-33 ministers will reaffirm their commitment to strengthening a rules-based, fair, inclusive, and transparent multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core.
Indonesia will continue to advocate a firm yet constructive approach to ensure the interests of developing countries remain part of the WTO agricultural reform agenda.
These include the issue of Public Stockholding for Food Security Purposes (PSH) to safeguard food security, the Special Safeguard Mechanism (SSM) as a tool to address import surges, and Special and Differential Treatment (S&DT) provisions.
He said Indonesia, together with other G-33 members, will intensify coordination to ensure developing countries’ priority issues remain a focus in WTO agricultural reform discussions ahead of the 14th Ministerial Conference.
“Indonesia’s active leadership in this forum underscores the country’s commitment to advancing a more inclusive, responsive multilateral trading system that supports development priorities, particularly food security and the welfare of smallholder farmers,” Budi said.
