“On behalf of the Government of Indonesia and myself, I wish you a Happy Holy Day of Nyepi and Saka New Year 1948,” said Umar in a statement issued in Jakarta on Wednesday.
He noted that this year’s Nyepi, observed on March 19, is particularly significant as it coincides with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and comes just ahead of Eid al-Fitr, expected on March 21.
According to Umar, the convergence reflects a strong symbol of interfaith harmony in Indonesia.
“This is not merely a coincidence, but a reminder of the shared spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’: One Earth, One Family,” he said.
The minister said the theme underscores that differences should be seen as a source of strength that reinforces social cohesion among Indonesians.
He added that these values are reflected in the Catur Brata Penyepian, the four prohibitions observed during Nyepi.
Through Amati Geni, or refraining from fire and light, practitioners are encouraged to extinguish inner anger and ego, while Amati Karya, or refraining from work, promotes reflection and spiritual awareness.
Amati Lelungan, or refraining from travel, allows nature to rest and restore balance, while Amati Lelanguan, or refraining from entertainment, encourages detachment from worldly pleasures.
“By observing Nyepi, Hindus are essentially giving the universe a pause. If we respect nature, it will in turn uphold our dignity,” Umar said.
He expressed hope that the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” would continue to inspire greater tolerance and mutual respect across religious communities.
Umar also encouraged Indonesians to embrace the moment as an opportunity to deepen solidarity and maintain peaceful coexistence.
He said Indonesia’s pluralistic society requires continuous efforts to preserve unity and mutual understanding.
The minister added that religious observances can serve as a foundation for building stronger social bonds.
“May God Almighty always grant us peace, health and prosperity,” he said.
