Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar extended Easter greetings to Christians and called for prayers for peace, harmony and national unity, officials said on Saturday.

“I, Nasaruddin Umar, Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, wish you a Happy Easter 2026,” he said in Jakarta.

He said Easter is not only a religious observance but also a moment to strengthen spiritual values within society.

The minister urged Christians to use the occasion as a foundation to reinforce solidarity and maintain social harmony across communities.

“I call on Christians, in the joy of Easter, to pray for the people and the nation so that Indonesia remains peaceful, calm and harmonious,” he said.

Nasaruddin, who also serves as Grand Imam of Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque, expressed hope that the celebration would bring blessings to the nation.

He called on all groups to continue upholding unity in diversity to sustain a peaceful and cohesive society.

Christians in Indonesia have marked a 40-day Lent period leading up to Easter, including Palm Sunday and the Holy Triduum.

The Triduum comprises Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, culminating in Easter celebrations.

Nasaruddin said the series of observances should strengthen faith, hope and love among Christians.

He added that such values are important in fostering resilience and compassion within society.

Earlier, during a Good Friday service on April 3, Jakarta Cathedral priest Father Yohanes Deodatus urged young people to remain steadfast in faith.

He called on youth to build resilience amid global challenges and maintain humility in their lives.

He said young people should have clear direction while avoiding arrogance.

“In the context of our nation, we face difficult and challenging times, including global pressures,” he said.

He urged people to draw closer to God and remain faithful despite hardships.

“God is always present and never abandons us, even in our weaknesses,” he added.
