Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Nutri-level policy by the Health Ministry is an effort to advance national development by strengthening the very foundation, which is the younger generation, by ensuring their health, Population and Family Development Minister Wihaji stated.

Wihaji said here on Tuesday that his administration supports the initiative, noting that it helps in ensuring the younger generation remains healthy by reducing risks of diseases linked to excessive intake of sugar, salt, and fat.

"This is the preparation on a foundational level. Starting from the foundation, we work together. As per the President's directive, we cannot do it alone, (but through) collaboration," he remarked.

He emphasized that building a healthy future generation begins at the family level.

On the same occasion, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin highlighted Free Health Checkup (CKG) results, which show a concerning number of children with diabetes. Hence, Nutri-level serves as a strategic measure to educate people on choosing nutritious foods and drinks for consumption.

Collaboration with the Population and Family Development Ministry is crucial in promoting such a healthy lifestyle among families, he noted.

Moreover, the director for planning and development at State Social Security for Health (BPJS Kesehatan), Sutopo Patria Jati, stated that the measure is a strategic preventive approach to reduce the burden on health costs.

"BPJS Kesehatan's role is like a firefighter. It will be very helpful if there are no more 'fires' caused by unhealthy lifestyles, including wrong or excessive sugar, salt, fat consumption," Jati noted.

Nutri-level policy includes labeling foods and drinks with several markers, such as A in deep green for items with low sugar, salt, and fat content; B in light green, C in yellow, and D in red for high sugar, salt, and fat levels.

In its initial phase, the policy will be applied to beverages before being expanded to other products.
