Eye specialist at the regional hospital, Dr. Yusnidah Z Ahmad Sp.M., said here on Tuesday that this trend has emerged along with the increasing use of digital devices among the public.
Besides cataracts, which are still the most common eye disease, complaints resulting from gadget use are now increasingly being encountered in eye clinics, she said.
"Typically, complaints of tired eyes, dry eyes, watery eyes, and even increased myopia and nearsightedness occur due to long-term gadget use," Ahmad said.
She said that the activity of continuously looking at a screen at close range can worsen a person's eyesight if it is not balanced with sufficient rest.
"This condition can be experienced by various age groups, especially those who have use cell phones, computers, and laptops intensively," she said.
Therefore, people are encouraged to start managing the time they spend using digital devices and giving their eyes a break to rest.
Ahmad also advised the public to immediately check their eye condition at a health facility if they experience complaints, to prevent more serious problems.
