Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) encourages equalization efforts for Indonesian diaspora academics abroad so they can attain the level of principal researcher domestically.

"We are currently considering how to equalize the Indonesian diaspora abroad to reach the level of principal researcher. If we can achieve this, many diaspora will return to Indonesia and strengthen our research," said BRIN Head Arif Satria in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He emphasized that the presence of the Indonesian diaspora abroad remains important as a liaison for collaboration with various global research institutions.

However, for diaspora who wish to return, BRIN is working to prepare various instruments to support this.

"This will help accelerate the brain gain process; we will gain tremendous talent from various countries to harness their potential," he said.

Satria emphasized the importance of strengthening the research ecosystem through synergy between BRIN, universities, and international research institutions, noting that collaboration among the three must run in harmony.

He also highlighted research funding support through the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), which is considered a crucial pillar in strengthening the national research ecosystem.

With these efforts, BRIN is expected to attract top talent, both domestic and international, to strengthen national research capacity.

Meanwhile, LPDP Director of Research Facilitation Ayom Widipaminto explained that LPDP, as the endowment fund manager, currently oversees four endowment funds in the education sector: the education endowment fund for scholarships, the research endowment fund, the cultural endowment fund, and the university endowment fund.

Widipaminto emphasized that funding plays a crucial role in the long-term development of research. LPDP, as the endowment fund manager, functions as a funding facilitator that encourages the acceleration of sustainable research development.

According to him, sustainability is key to strengthening the research ecosystem, as research endowment funds remain available to finance various talent development and research programs.

“From high school, undergraduate, graduate, and even to global-level research, we will provide funding, both for appreciation and research,” Widipaminto said.
