Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto pledged full medical care and compensation for victims of the Bekasi train collision, as authorities respond to one of Indonesia’s deadliest rail accidents in recent years.

“All victims are being treated well,” he said after visiting the injured at dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid Regional Public Hospital in Bekasi, West Java, on Tuesday.

The crash occurred Monday evening when a long-distance train collided with a commuter train at Bekasi Timur Station, leaving 14 dead and 84 injured as of 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to KAI.

Prabowo said medical teams are handling the victims, with many already cleared to return home.

He stressed the government will take full responsibility by providing compensation to affected victims and families.

“Yes, compensation will be provided,” he said when asked by reporters.

He also expressed condolences over the incident.

The president ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the collision.

He said the government will accelerate construction of safety infrastructure at busy rail crossings to prevent similar incidents.

KAI also extended condolences to victims and families affected by the crash involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek and a Commuter Line train.

The company said evacuation was complex, with some victims requiring specialized extraction from damaged carriages.

KAI said all victims’ medical and funeral costs will be fully covered.
