Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has set a target for Indonesia to achieve energy self‑sufficiency by 2029 at the latest, citing the country’s vast resource potential.

“Our target is energy self‑sufficiency by the end of 2029, at the latest. If possible earlier, we will work quickly,” Prabowo said during a working visit to Cilacap, Central Java, on Wednesday.

He noted that Indonesia possesses significant energy resources that must be managed effectively for the welfare of its people.

“The Almighty has given us extraordinary resources. It is up to us whether we can manage them well, whether we have the courage to safeguard them,” he said.

Prabowo warned that such potential would be meaningless without proper management and strong commitment, stressing that effective resource governance is essential to shield Indonesia from global conflicts of interest.

He pointed out that resource‑rich countries often become targets of international competition. “It is natural that a rich country is targeted by many,” he remarked, underscoring the need for Indonesia to manage its wealth in the national interest.

Earlier, Prabowo announced plans to halt all fuel imports within two to three years while intensifying efforts to strengthen energy independence.

The government aims to achieve this through a 100‑gigawatt electrification program, a plan to accelerate the expansion of Indonesia’s national power capacity by 100 GW within two years.

The program includes shutting down 13 diesel‑fired power plants operated by state utility PT PLN, which consume large volumes of fuel. In addition, the government is promoting electric vehicles and expanding the use of renewable energy sources.

These initiatives include converting palm oil and used cooking oil into aviation fuel, as well as producing biodiesel and bioethanol, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
