“Garuda Baru has proven that when they are reached out to, assisted, nurtured, and given opportunities, they are able to demonstrate their potential and achieve accomplishments,” Priyono said in a statement during the send-off ceremony for the contingent here on Monday.
The contingent consists of fostered children, including street children, child workers, and children from underprivileged families in deciles 1-2 or the lowest groups of the National Socio-Economic Single Data (DTSEN).
They have been trained to build discipline, self-confidence, and character development for a better future through street soccer activities at PPOP Ragunan student sports training center in South Jakarta.
The government’s presence at the send-off, Priyono noted, reflects its support for efforts to empower vulnerable groups so they are no longer underestimated.
He expressed hope that Garuda Baru’s participation in the international event would inspire millions of other children in Indonesia to continue developing and remain confident despite their limitations.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Trans Energy Muda Foundation, Yuni Shara, encouraged the players by saying that the opportunity to represent Indonesia on the world stage is an extraordinary first step toward changing their lives.
The Street Child World Cup in Mexico is not merely a sports competition, but also a platform for vulnerable children around the world to advocate for the fulfillment of children’s rights and to build friendships across countries.
In addition to competing, the Garuda Baru team also carries a mission to introduce Indonesian culture to the world through cultural exchanges on the sidelines of the event.
