Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has prepared five technologies to strengthen resilience along Java’s northern coast and protect millions from rising tidal flooding risks.

BRIN Head Arif Satria said the technologies include modular vertical embankments and concrete blocks that act as barriers while absorbing wave energy and improving connectivity.

“Technology mastery is key to addressing tidal flooding while strengthening national technological independence,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

He added BRIN has installed breakwater protection layers with automatic interlocking systems in 11 regions, including Bali, North Sumatra and East Java.

“This technology offers high stability and is more economical and easier to produce,” Satria said.

He also highlighted platforms using sea currents, allowing embankments and docks to function as energy generators.

Another innovation is hybrid eco-engineering, combining technical design with nature-based solutions to boost coastal resilience and restore ecosystems.

Satria said the technology has a local content rate exceeding 70 percent.

Head of the Java Northern Coast Management Authority (BOPPJ) Didit Herdiawan Ashaf said President Prabowo Subianto has ordered a swift master plan for coastal protection.

BOPPJ is working with ministries, agencies and universities to prepare the plan, he said.

“BRIN is supporting us with technology. We have discussed requirements for about six months,” Ashaf said, noting both domestic and imported technologies will be used.

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono stressed the need for an integrated approach.

He noted the northern Java coastline contributes about 27 percent to Indonesia’s GDP.

He added that tens of millions of residents along the coast require stronger collective action to mitigate tidal flooding risks.
