Jakarta (ANTARA) -

Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said Indonesia is projected to become the world’s fourth-largest aviation market by 2030.

He noted that the global aircraft market remains highly promising. Data from McKinsey & Company shows that total global aircraft orders reached a record high of 15,700 units in 2024.

“According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Indonesia is projected to become the world’s fourth-largest aviation market by 2030,” the minister said on Wednesday.

He added that the International Civil Aviation Organization estimates Indonesia’s domestic flights and passenger numbers will grow significantly, reaching around 7.4 million flights and nearly 690 million passengers by 2045.

“Therefore, through this Joint Declaration of Intent, the government aims to build strong collaboration that not only produces a strategic framework but also delivers tangible technology transfer and increases local content in the aircraft manufacturing industry,” Kartasasmita said.

He explained that the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) between the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (PPN/Bappenas) and aircraft manufacturer Airbus is expected to strengthen human resource capacity in aerospace technology.

The agreement will also enhance the maintenance, repair, and overhaul system and strengthen Indonesia’s role in the global aerospace supply chain, he added.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of National Development Planning signed the Joint Declaration of Intent with Airbus to support the development of Indonesia’s aerospace industry ecosystem.

Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Rachmat Pambudy emphasized that as an archipelagic country, Indonesia relies heavily on air connectivity to support economic growth, equitable development, and public mobility.

He said technological innovation and aircraft operational efficiency are crucial to meeting these needs.

Pambudy added that the collaboration must go beyond aircraft procurement to include human resource development, strengthening the maintenance, repair, and overhaul sector, and expanding domestic industrial capacity to position Indonesia as a regional aerospace hub.

As a follow-up to the agreement, Airbus will collaborate with PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

The collaboration will be integrated with Airbus and supported by ministries, state-owned enterprises, universities, and the private sector, aiming to position Indonesia as a hub for aerospace growth in the Asia-Pacific region.

Pambudy expressed hope that PT Dirgantara Indonesia can become a tier-one supplier for Airbus, enabling it to manufacture complete aircraft wings or even aircraft, with the possibility of establishing a production facility in Kertajati, West Java.
