The announcement follows months of preparation and the signing of a Gubernatorial Instruction (Ingub) specifically targeting waste separation at the source.
Governor Pramono emphasized that the initiative is no longer just a trial but a formal movement involving all administrative regions, including the Thousand Islands Regency.
“Socialization has been carried out by all mayors and the Regent of the Thousand Islands in their respective areas,” Pramono stated on Friday. “May 10 marks the official launch of the movement.”
The city is not starting from scratch. For the past three months, pilot projects have been active in the Rorotan and Cilincing neighborhoods of North Jakarta. These zones served as a blueprint for the logistical requirements of household sorting.
Based on the data gathered from these areas, the Governor expressed confident in scaling up the program citywide.
“The pilot project actually started in Rorotan and Cilincing, but I hope that next week this becomes a massive movement across all administrative cities in Jakarta,” he added.
To strengthen implementation, the Jakarta Provincial Government plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry for a formal joint declaration.
Pramono stressed that the success of the initiative depends on public discipline and collective responsibility.
“I don’t want this movement to be half-hearted,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to full-scale implementation.
He reiterated that waste management in the capital is a shared responsibility between the government and the public.
By institutionalizing waste sorting at the household level, the city aims to reduce the large volume of unsorted waste currently burdening landfills and processing facilities.
