e-voting is not merely about speed and efficiency ...Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Akhmad Wiyagus stated digital election simulation facilities should evolve into centers for knowledge development as well as the formulation of policy recommendations related to digital election in Indonesia.
"The Digital Election Simulation Lab (DESLab) of the Domestic Policy Strategy Agency (BSKDN) should not merely become a display room for e-voting devices, but must become a space for producing knowledge and policy recommendations," Wiyagus said here on Friday.
Through such facility, he expressed hope that discussions on digital-based election technology would not stop at the conceptual level, but could be studied and tested directly.
The laboratory allows government officials, academics, students, community organizations, and various stakeholders to simulate the e-voting process comprehensively. The process includes voter verification, implementation of the "one man one vote" principle, vote counting, and audit mechanisms.

Wiyagus explained that Indonesia has already gained experience in implementing electronic voting. Based on data from PT Inti Konten Indonesia, the e-voting system in Indonesia has been applied in 1,910 villages across 16 provinces since 2013 without significant obstacles.
In one hand, Indonesia needs to learn from other countries, such as Brazil in accelerating vote recapitulation, Estonia with its internet-based voting system, and the United States with its implementation of ballot audits.
On the other hand, the election experiences like in Germany, Netherlands, Ireland, and Norway also provide important lessons regarding system security challenges and public trust.
"The experiences of those countries show that e-voting is not merely about speed and efficiency, but also must be supported by strong regulations, security, audits, voter literacy, and public trust," Wiyagus stated.
