The Secretary of the NCB Interpol Indonesia, Brigadier General Untung Widyatmoko, of the National Police's International Relations Division, conveyed that there has been a recent shift in transnational crime to Indonesia.
"After the crackdown in Indochina, the crime shifted to Indonesia, and we certainly anticipated and predicted this," he remarked in a press conference on Saturday.
He further explained that law enforcement actions have been conducted in the Indochina region, especially in Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, which have long been bases for recruitment networks and online criminal activities targeting transnational victims and foreign nationals.
The online criminal activity in question encompasses various online operational patterns, from fraud and scams, ranging from love scams to online investments, including online gambling.
Meanwhile, Widyatmoko noted that the shift in criminal activity is evident in the numerous recent arrests and disclosures of transnational digital crimes in Indonesia, from Surabaya, Denpasar, Surakarta, Yogyakarta, Batam, Sukabumi, Bogor, to Jakarta.
Therefore, he emphasized that collaboration is necessary to address this issue, as the National Police cannot work alone and requires support from related ministries and institutions.
This way, the NCB and the Foreign Affairs Ministry have collaborated and consolidated to address this rapidly growing crime phenomenon.
Widyatmoko said the NCB has also coordinated with the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections to anticipate the entry of individuals listed as subjects of interest (SOI).
SOI refers to foreign nationals and Indonesian citizens who are under special surveillance by the Directorate General of Immigration due to indications of immigration violations or transnational crimes.
“Because if law enforcement efforts rely solely on the police, they certainly will not be effective,” he remarked.
