Investment and Downstreaming Minister Rosan Roeslani said on Tuesday (May 12) the government is reviewing the Giant Sea Wall project at Java North Coast to expand its role beyond coastal protection into an economic growth engine.
Rosan Roeslani, who also serves as CEO of Danantara Indonesia, said the government is coordinating with the head of the Java North Coast Management Authority (BOPPJ) to refine the project’s master plan.
"So it is not only about building the Giant Sea Wall, but also about creating points to boost the economy, attract investment, and support economic growth," Rosan said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
He said the project is expected to generate new economic growth not only in Jakarta, but also in other regions included in the coastal development plan.

Rosan added that the government is continuing assessments to ensure the project delivers optimal benefits for coastal protection and investment growth.
"We are reviewing, providing input, and conducting assessments so this can eventually create new economic centers not only in Jakarta, but also in the areas where the Giant Sea Wall will be built," he said.
The Giant Sea Wall project is planned to stretch 575 kilometers along Java’s northern coast area and will be divided into 15 segments.

Authorities said the project is designed to protect factories and offices, as well as to integrate coastal ecosystems, including fishing communities that form the largest ecosystem group in the area.
The coastal protection system for northern Java, including the Giant Sea Wall, is part of a national strategy to safeguard the sustainability of the region’s coastal civilization.
The project is intended to protect areas contributing about US$368.3 billion to Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to government estimates.
