Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI), together with the Presidential Staff Office and the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, has launched the National Movement for Safe Migrants as part of efforts to strengthen protection for Indonesian migrant workers abroad.

Through the initiative, the government aims to address various issues faced by Indonesian migrant workers, ranging from non-procedural placement and fraud to human trafficking cases during overseas employment.

“Today, as a joint commitment of all stakeholders, including the government and in line with the President’s directive, we must enhance protection for migrant workers,” said Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) Mukhtarudin during a press conference on Monday.

He made the remarks at the launch of the National Movement for Safe Migrants, held at the KP2MI Ministry Office in Jakarta.

Mukhtarudin emphasized the importance of cross-ministerial and institutional collaboration to dismantle illegal syndicates involved in the placement of migrant workers.

He noted that many prospective migrant workers have fallen victim to fraud, resulting in exploitation and human trafficking. Through the initiative, KP2MI is working with relevant ministries and agencies to ensure protection and address issues faced by Indonesian migrant workers abroad.

“After today, we will carry out large-scale activities across Indonesia, including at all service centers, regional technical units, local governments, organizations, and strategic partners to implement the National Movement for Safe Migrants,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Immigration and Corrections Silmy Karim stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach to addressing migrant worker issues.

“Why is this important? Because many Indonesian migrant workers abroad still have incomplete documents. For years, we have not provided them with optimal attention,” he said.

He added that currently, many migrant workers abroad are still facing problems due to incomplete documents because they became migrant workers illegally.

Through the National Movement for Safe Migrants, his ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of P2MI to provide facilities from the time migrant workers obtain their passports, upon departure, and to ensure that migrant workers have complete documentation before working abroad.

Through its Immigration Attachés and the KP2MI Attachés abroad, both minstries will also jointly address all issues faced by Indonesian migrant workers abroad.

In the meantime, Chief of Presidential Staff Dudung Abdurachman reiterated his commitment to protecting Indonesian migrant workers by ensuring oversight, including assessing the readiness of Indonesian migrant workers before they work abroad.

He added that many migrant workers continue to face problems due to incomplete documentation, often as a result of non-procedural migration.

Through the National Movement for Safe Migrants, the ministry will cooperate with KP2MI to provide services from passport issuance and departure processes to ensuring that migrant workers have complete documentation before working abroad.

The two ministries will also coordinate through immigration attachés and KP2MI representatives overseas to handle issues faced by Indonesian migrant workers in destination countries.

Meanwhile, Chief of Presidential Staff Dudung Abdurachman reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting migrant workers by strengthening oversight, including assessing their readiness before departure.
